| Well, I finally got a chance to work on the beadlocks again. After more research I stepped it up to (25) 3/8-16 bolts. Before I had only (20) 1/4-20 bolts. I ran several test parts to be sure everything was how I wanted it. Because once they are welded in, there is no turning back. Today was a big day though. Today they got welded together. I was a bit worried about who I was going to have weld them. Oviously it had to be someone good, but even then, if they mess up I didn't want to have to hate them forever. So one day it clicked that we have several robotic welders that would weld a nearly perfect weld all the way around with no problem. The only issue is I don't really have any test pieces to test weld parameters on. It is either all or nothing. So I got with a buddy of mine at work who is really good at programming the robots and asked if this was something that could be done. He confirmed that the robot could esily do it, but being that it is such a small weld it might not be all that pretty. In the end we both felt that doing it robotically was better than having it done by hand. We got a few scap parts together to get the weld parameters set. I put some small tacks to hold the ring to the wheel and hoped for the best.
I think they turned out great. I like the fact that it was done as one continuous weld. No starting & stopping or tie-ins to worry about leaking.
Getting the robot programmed......

Welding.....

The results.....

Tell me about it. I might have to rethink some of the projects I want to do and see if I they would be good for the robot or not. I work with them all day long and never thought to consider them.
If there is something you need fabbed up I can see what I can do. I will say I am probably not going to be doing another set of bead locks. It was a bigger undertaking than I expected. _________________ '04 TJ - 4.0, 35's, 6" Long Arm, F&R Lockers, Stronger Rear Shafts, 4.56 Gears, SYE, Tom Woods Rear.... more to come |
