PostSubject: Phase 2 Mud sucks, I'm going racing!   Mon Sep 28, 2009 5:42 pm

Mud bandit was fun, not something I want to run all day with the stiff suspension and having to ride the brakes all day. SO, phase 2 will be to transform from Mud bogger to rock racer. It will not be done for November, no chance in hell. so next spring for Rausch races, then line mountain races, and the one in North carolina.
Phase 2 includes:
1. Replace transmission with TH400, engine braking, full manual? control etc.
2. Replace transfer case with Atlas 5:1 or 6:1 or Stak transfer case. once i run the numbers I'll know.
3. Change suspension to link style suspension with coilover shocks.
4. Tube back half of CJ.
5. Stretch wheelbase by 8" in rear and 4" in front
6. Convert to full hydraulic steerring (already purchased the PSC kit).
7. Modify to be in full compliance with rules of racing: covered fuel cell, metal firewalls and roof etc etc.
8. Lift about 2" with new suspension
9. raise engine about 2" into engine bay and tuck tummy for flat belly skid.
10 finish tube work to include front radiator hoop and tie into main cage.

Looks like a solid plan. I like the idea of cutting off the back of the tub and frame. Leave the front till the rear is done.

line mountian races are races about 30 miles west of Rausch creek. 16 miles, 3 loops or so with green/blue trail style races for time. last event a couple weeks ago they had 120 or so rigs racing

are 60's going to hold up to 44's and rock racing. thats a heavy tire. a lot of the racing guys are running 4.3s or 3.8s atlas with autos, or even higher ratio.

Most of the guys running the 7miler are running little tires its more hill climbs & obstacles i think you would not be happy with that race

I watched the videos and there are some that run 2wd buggies in there. lots do not complete the course due to breakage from trying to go fast and hitting a hole or rock too fast etc. It would be fun to run but not my primary objective. I want the rock races at rausch and NC and line mountain just gives me something else to do with it. For ratio's I'm thinking either atlas 5:1 or perhaps a Stak case with 5.3:1, 3.8:1 and 1:1 not sure yet. Tires are really heavy, might end up selling them for a different tire but i'll have to compare weights/prices etc. also thought about just cutting all the little lugs off to shave some weight.

my goal is to do the RC races if the S-10 sells if not the finances won't be there to do it. the stak case definatly offers more ratio i believe there very large & heavey the only downfall. would definalty want coilovers with big resevoirs for cooling i think a little smaller tire would be a good idea & a heavey sidewall

Is there a web site for the races or a name for the area where they take place?
