PostSubject: Winches....   Winches.... Icon_minitimeWed Jun 17, 2009 5:04 pm

So the time is coming again where I will be looking in to getting another winch. It is sometime away but I have just about completely planned out the toyota build its just waiting for funds to build back up for the next step. I started thinking about this today when I was at the TSC. They have Champion 8000,4500,3000 & 2000 lbs machines in stock. The 2K model is 80.00 and the 8K is going for 400.00. I have always been a huge fan of the WARN line. Now M8000 is going for 550+ shipping thinking that would be what I want for the Toyota. Thinking that this is a subject that none of us have covered in sometime and I would bring it up and collect input and maybe find a deal or learn something I didn't already know. I also wanted to ask everyone what is a good rating for a wench to mount on a trailer. I want to mount one for pulling the cars on the trailers. I seem to have a growing need for a winch on the trailer since I get the calls from people about there broke down car and buying me a case of beer and dinner is cheaper than a 150 min. tow in Nova. As well my friend that rents the trailer from me to move single cars from auctions was asking me if I would want to go in halves on one since he would be using it alot as well.

Mechanic at the shop put the atlas on that we got from EMS. Decent winch - the remote is sweet because when you're winching junk cars up it's nice to hop in and have the little remote so handy. It has a funky brake though although Rob, refresh my memory here, I believe you said EMS had a fix for this.

As far as a trail rig I don't think I would ever put anything other than a Warn in place. I've seen many other winches that weren't up to par and as far as I'm concerned when you're in a place where you need a winch you want it to work 100% of the time. I think the M8000 is one of the best bangs for your buck.

I was looking into one for my trailer as well and I would probably go for the atlas if there is a fix for it. How about bull dogs? That's where my trailer winch search landed me last time. I believe Randy has some good prices on them too. I also somewhat remember reading some good reviews on them but it was a bit ago. Anybody?

a few years back I got my m8000 for $550 shipped from winch depot. Hell for pulling cars on a trailer I would go with a HF winch with a two year warrenty on in it.

I have the bulldog 9k winch on mine that I bought from Randy, don't remmeber the price but it was less than 400. One thing to remember is the winch line length. you likely won't be making long pulls so get one with a short rope. The more layers of wire on the winch the less pulling power it has so a 9k winch with 5 layers pulls only about 5k or so. scroll down on link for details

pulling onto a trailer the 9500 bulldog pulled the CJ up with no problems though during the move. I think there is an 8k model for like 300 as well and the owner of Bulldog winches is very supportive of his products from what I'm told.

My advice is stay away from the atlas I don't like mine and it will be going away. Its cheap but you get what you pay for.As for the fix i'm still not real happy with that idea hate to use rob as a Guinna pig but waiting to see what happens with the fix.(so far so good though)I think this may be hard on the motor.

I agree with Chuck ATLAS SUX the fix is good so far but winch is next buy for me. The fix is weld the clutch together as one my buddy did it for me since EMS was to busy and had my winch apart for 2wks for a 1hr job. We all know I HAVE NO PATIENCE lol!

Well you can always use the atlas winch on the trailer and get yourself a new one for the YJ
