| Stupid question, but wouldn't you need the carriage bolts either way? | |

no carriage bolts on mine. angle iron on the ends and sides holds it all down.

Notsure you do need them if you had metal angel holding it down. I'm not sure how they don't bow and bend. I would do bolts every three or four feet to keep them from bowing either way and angel on the ends to keep the boards from getting tore up.

| That's kind of where my head was nester. I think it will last much longer but Bill, your trailer still looks like new so who knows. Just seems like it would be worth while doing it after all the work you put into it, it can't hurt. | |

I'd like to see that. I need to get working on mine soon. I may just take it to be done at Jiffy Hitch. I'm guessing everything will need to be replaced.

| Kat if you willing to pay someone to hook up your brakes that means your willing to buy the beer and pizza for us to help you do it then if something is wrong you have a feel for where the problems might be.
Sorry Danny didn't mean to hijack your thread

| hooking up new electric bakes involves bolting up the four bolts for the new electric drum and hooking up two wires (one hot and one ground) unless the magnet is worn out (which i doubt because it takes us a few years of running them everyday to wear them out) all you have to do is replace the shoes and adjust them.
P.S. jiffy dicks are nothing but a bunch of asshole theives that know as much as you do about trailers and welding.

| You are correct Nester, I have no problems paying for food and beer. Danny, it sounds like we should have a joint trailer brake wrenching party and get them both fixed at the same time. I'm all for learning new things. Oh...and I have no problem taking care of the spiders. They don't bother me. | |

I know, but after seeing the way you handeled mine, I thought you were the jeff corwin of trouser snakes The best way to upgrade brakes on your trailer is just to get a bigger truck so you don't need the trailer brakes

I'm running into the same problem as this guy had from Pirate a few yrs back. The 12x2 brake housing is welded directly to the axle and not bolted to a flange on the axles like most trailers do. The whole replacement brake assembly is cheap - about $35 each side. I need to figure out if I can cut the majority of the backing plate away and drill it out to use it as the new flange. That would put the brakes about 1/8" closer to the wheel than normal. other option is to replace the springs, the drums and the magnet and try to salvage the same backing plate.
