bought some steel yesterday from a place in Hagerstown and got a price on aluminum while I was there. $2.16/ pound or $123.17 for a sheet of 4x8x1/8 aluminum. sounded like a good price.

that's not a bad price. I haven't priced anywhere yet but I always heard 250+ for a 4x8 sheet.

not bendable? The 1/8" aluminum sheet I bought was like sheet metal wavering back in forth while loading. Should be able to curve a little bit for the roof but not actually "bend". you could stop by this weekend and check it out.

I want to bend it alittle for the radius of the bent tube in the front and the rear but also use the extra of the sheet for a dash whitch would be a bend with a press brake. the metal supply company said that 6061 would crack when bent. but 5052 wouldn't but wouldn't be as stong. Also would like to weld on the dash if I could. which type would work best

SOme general info from several sources. looks like it really depends on the severity of the bend.

6061- T6 Very good corrosion resistance and finsh ability, plus excellent welding. Strength level of 6061-T6 aluminum sheet is about that of mild steel. 6061-T6 aluminum sheet can be fabricated by most of the commonly used techniques. Typical uses are aircraft landing mats, truck bodies and frames, structural components.

5052-H32 Highest strength in the NON-heatable alloys. Not structual. 5052 H32 aluminum sheet has higher fatigue strength than most alloys 5052H32 aluminum sheet has excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine applications and has excellent workability. 5052 H32 aluminum sheet is commonly used to make fuel tanks.

Alloy 5086
Very strong, not heat treatable, with excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability.
5086-H116: Strain-hardened only
5086-H32: Strain-hardened and stabilized
5086-H34: Strain-hardened and stabilized

Alloy 6061
Heat treatable, easily welded, with very good corrosion resistance and finishing characteristics. Very commonly used for architectural products
6061-O: Annealed (or "soft", bendable condition)
6061-T4: Heat treated and naturally aged
6061-T6: Heat treated and artificially aged
6061-T65: Heat treated and artificially aged
6061-T6511: Heat treated and artificially aged

5052-H32 (QQ-A-250/8d)
Main alloy is magnesium. Far stronger than any of the alloys described above, yet forms well with reasonable inside bend radii. Corrosion resistance and weldability is very good. Better salt water corrosion resistance than 1100. Used for electronic chassis, tanks, pressure vessels and any number of parts requiring considerable strength and formability at reasonable cost. Anodizing may be slightly yellowish.

6061-T6 (QQ-A-250/11d)
Alloyed with magnesium & silicon. Heat treatable to improve strength. A widely used structural alloy for light to medium strength applications. Requires much larger inside bend radii than 5052-H32, but can be formed. Combines good weldability, corrosion resistance, and strength after heat treatment. Since it looses appreciable strength when welded, the 5000 series alloys replace it in dump body and some marine applications.

I payed $144 for a sheet of 5052. I used the 5052 because of its ability to deform without cracking. In a roof application I wanted a material that would absorb an impact, stretch and still maintain its strength. With the 6061 it has a bad tendency, as stated, of cracking. It fails catastrophically, as in it does not give you a warning before it snaps.
