| so is anyone familiar with the process? I would like to register the old CJ as a street rod but as is I know it wont pass inspection. not signals, no wipers, no speedometer, lots of loose bolts from this rebuild project so not road worthy yet etc. I heard I only have 60 days to title it in MD? And then register as a street rod? After I title it does it need to have a safety inspection within 30 days? I ask these questions because getting through the the MVA and getting someone that understands what I am doing is very difficult. it has an out of state title. | |

I just did mine but tagged it historic in MD. I think street rod has to be a little older than 20 yrs, maybe 25, and heavily modified. Historic is easy to do, no inspection at all before or after. Just make sure the title is signed by both you and the seller. It will help if you have a bill of sale but I think the amount filled in on the title may be sufficient for historic. Also have your insurance info...binder/acct number.
Go to the link and print the historic/street rod app. Print the app for certification of title..you can register on this form as well.

| Maryland is being very strict on Street Rod. When I bought my Chevelle it was titled as a street rod and insured thru a specialy car insurance company. I took the title to the MVA and they fault me saying it should be titled as a antique. I said no its not stock and it already has been titled as a street rod. After 4 different people they finally agreed to titling as so. What I was told was that a street rod is a vehicle past the antique car age and that is heavily modified from original condition. Well it was fully tubbed with full cage and a 4 link. How much more than stock do you want. I also ran into the same problem when I wanted to tag the cj7 as a street rod and I lost that battle. Street rod is the way to go. You have no inspection at all.. You can run any tire and really have no restrictions including exhaust.
Good luck........If you have one of local tag and title companies around you try them before going directly to the mva. I have had better luck with them in these kind of situations. I never visit the mva if I dont have to. We have a place here called Dave's tag and title and he is great to work with. I will give him the extra cash anytime to do my titling work.

| Mine is tag as a street rod. I went to a tag and title place and paid the extra 20 bucks, they know what they are doing. No problem as long as it 25 years or older. good luck with getting cheap insurance I'm still paying $700 a year for liability only no classic insurance will touch it because I wheel it. | |

| Thats ridiculous for a cj.. I only pay that for my dam duramax. Is that for full coverage? What is your deduct? I always run a high deduct on my rigs because its not worth turning in unless its stolen or totaled. | |

| Bill, what did you find out about the street rod tags on the cj?
With street rod can they say anything about no fender flares, tires past the wheel wells and a lift?

I got historic tags because it was quite simple. Just went in filled out the form and left with tags. insurance is still 300 for liability. Street rod tags process has changed and now requires you to take the vehicle down to glen burnie for safety inspection etc. not sure what you can do with historic before they start bothering you but I'll find out eventually and just pull the tag and let you know when it happens.

| I just pulled this from the MVA site.
"How do I register a vehicle as an historic vehicle?
To be registered as a historic vehicle (class L), your vehicle must be 20 model years old or older and must not have been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured.
A historic registered vehicle cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. It can only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses.
If your historic vehicle is 60 years old or older, you may obtain a permanent, non-transferable registration for a one-time fee.
You can apply to register your vehicle as a historic vehicle in person at any of the MVA’s full service branch offices. You also can mail the required documents to the MVA’s Mail in Registration Unit in the Glen Burnie office, or go to an MVA licensed tag and title service where they will assist you in applying. Licensed tag and title services will charge a fee for this service.
The registration application documents include:
Application form – When your vehicle has a Maryland title and you are registering and titling it at the same time, the title can be used as the application form for both transactions. If the vehicle’s title was issued by another state, use the Application for Certificate of Title to apply. If you have already titled the vehicle in Maryland and now want to register it, you will need to complete the Application for New Plates/Stickers & Transfer of Plates or Non-Title Trailers. Application for Historic or Street Rod Registration."
