7 1/2 hour drive.
we're planning on heading to harlan ky labor day weekend. the offcial name of the place is black mountain off-road adventure park. they have about 6,000 acres and about 200 miles of trails of all levels. the off-road park is free to enter. the trail maps are $4 and the proceeds from the map sales goes to park to keep it open. here is the website for the off-road park http://www.harlancountytrails.com/blackmountain.php

they have 2 trailheads the north one is called putney trail head and the south one is called bailey's creek trail head. they both lead into the off-road park. at the putney trail there is a rv park that has full hook ups. it is right by the trail head so there is no need to trailer the rigs or drive them on the road. at this rv park they have cabins that can be rented here is the website of the rv park http://www.harlancountycampground.com/

now at the southtrail head there are more cabins. these cabins are owned by black mountain cabins. now these cabins are not on the trail head they are about 2 mintues from the trail. they have 2 different size cabins one sleeps 4 the other sleeps 8. here is the link to these cabins http://www.blackmountainrentals.com/index.html

there are some hotel in cumberland ky about 10 miles from the trail head. cumberland is the the north east. the one that has a special rate for the trails is the cumberland motel. it is $45 a night. they have 32 rooms. 2203 East Main Street, Cumberland, Kentucky 40823 (606)589-2181 or 1-(800)-821-5378 here is some more info and picture http://www.harlancountytrails.com/flyers/Cumberland%20Motel.pdf

they also have hotels in the town of harlan which is 8 miles from the trailhead these are Holiday Inn Express U.S. 421 South, Harlan 1-800-465-4329 or (606) 573-3385 and Mount Aire Motel U.S. 421 South, Harlan 1-800-988-4660 or (606) 573-4660

the plan right now is to head down friday morning. wheel saturday and sunday and come home on labor day. we are open to suggestions. the length of the trip is not set in stone. we picked labor day weekend so everyone would not have to take an extra day off of work. i have e-mailed the tourist center and they are going to send me a tourist packet. i also ordered a trail map. as soon as i get them i will post up some more info. there are tons of posts on pirate about this off-road park. pirate 4x4 is also having their 3rd annual camp-n-crawl at black mountain off-road adventure park.
