What wood? Trailer

Well this is the project that I'm in the middle of now....
I tore the old deck off of this heap, pressure washed it and painted about half of it before the rain put an end to that....
I'm gonna register it in Maine through an agency so that I don't have to sit at the MVA, don't have to pay for an inspection and it was pretty cheap and easy to do from my cubicle...
Trailer is 16 ft long and 77 inches wide
I went to Home Depot last night to check out the lumber selection. Should I use Pressure Treated or just the regular shit with a ton of the deck sealant I have left over from last summer??
Also should I use seven 2x10s and a 2x6 to = 76" across or nine 2x8s and one 2x6 to = 78" across? I was thinking of the first option so that there would be spacing between the boards so water won't pool up when it rains.

looking good danny, its good to see that trailer going to good use.....how wide is the jeep? as long as the 78" wide deck boards does not hit your wheels, that is what i would go with. i am pretty sure that all the deck boards will not be flush enough to make a water tight seal and that the water will still go through

Thanks Von.
The Jeep is 73" wide from the outside tire to outside tire.

I got new chains and a trailer jack for it the other day and my Dad won trailer lights in the ADA raffle a while back so he gave me those to wire up so its starting to come togeather.

danny the boards will shrink with age, so fit them tight to begin with. Also I would go with pressure traeted.

I would go as wide as you can (of course stay under 102" that's the law)
As most have found out when you have a trailer you will find many things
you can use it for , and other people help you find ways too. The worst thing is you try to do some thing and find out if you would have made it 6" wider it would be perfect. Of Course there is always a limit ,but keep in mind you will use it for more than your jeep when its done, so will other people.

Very true. Danny Send me a email with what you need and I can price it out thru my company and might be able to save you a little. I would go with presure treated lumber and go with the 78" width as long as the tires clear. If you need a board or two ripped down to fix better and let me know. Also do you have ramps? Most of us dont use them unless it is raining like crazy or snow but when you need them they save your ass.

well I picked up eight pressure treated 2x10's today for the trailer and dropped off the wheels for new tires... its getting there...
I got it tagged in Maine for cheap, hooked up the lights and finished painting it....

Ahh danny, if she's cut you off now, wait till after she has the kid.

In a word, yes. Not sure if TSC sells fenders, but if they do just grab some pre fabbed ones and weld them on with that new welder of yours.

Yes TSC has fenders. I'm going to be looking to get a set for mine since kats jeep attacked the drivers side and the other is starting to break as well.

What kinda paint did you use for the trailer frame and tongue?

Did you check your bearings and brakes on the axles?

I used rustoleum gloss black enamel about 4 or 5 cans of it. The bearings all seem to be in good shape. I'll grease them up real well before I put the wheels back on. Brakes are a hot mess - things growing all over the place and every spring is rusted and has fallen off. I have the guy thats getting the tires pricing the brakes out for me.

And Joe - that new welder magically turned into a crib sdsfhhgdigdhfo lol! 4

looking good danny. if you came right off the top of the wood over the wheels with some thick sheet metal, wouldn't that be good enough for fenders, as long as your wheels do not hit it when you have weight on the trailer

Are you going to weld in a L angel frame to the deck to hold to board down or just use carage bolts? Make sure you seal the top, bottom and ends of the boards before you call it done. Sealing the boards when they are new helps extend there life.

I was just looking at angle at TSC but it was only 72" wide and the deck is 77" wide. They had the fenders too for about $65 each.
I picked up the tires today too. When I get some free time I'm gonna go see whats been living inside the electric brakes for the last 19yrs...

Danny I would say carage bolts would do the trick for the boards. Did it come with ramps? Good luck with the breaks.
