That race was pretty awesome to watch. I only got a couple of pics from the day. Dean from Heavymetal has a ton of great pics on the Rausch Creek forum.
Bill - were you able to cool down and drive it back to the trailer? It was way past somebody's naptime so I had to get on the road before you all made it back to the pits.

long story short. Test drive CJ thursday and lost oil pressure. ordered crank and bearing kit overnight. spent all day friday, til midnight, rebuilding the bottom end of the motor. Motor ran great, very strong! Dinner at 1 a.m. slept some, woke at 5 am for 7 am tech. passed tech with no issues. started race at 9. Ran very strong but suspension coils were too stiff but body roll was too much. Need lighter tender coils and a rear sway bar. After half a lap the temp gauge was pegged. stopped fixed grounded wire on header, was still hot though so waited for it to cool a little. ran strong again but overheated again, waited, ran again. down devils den lost a coil retainer so front right coil dropped 3" down to frame. Couldnt find it so ran without it. ran strong through high speed area and took a left turn too sharp and went up on 2 wheels. saved it from a roll and ran strong again. lost brakes, pedal flopped to floor, ran an extra mile and decided to stop and fix it. duct tape on the linkage and moved on. finished the lap. damage: busted front 2 piece drive shaft carrier bearing(removed front shaft), lost front caliper(strapped it to the frame), adjusted coil stop to level vehicle and taped the other retainers on so they don't get lost, overheated in pits, topped off with water. Nick started second lap and ran very strong in 2wd, finished 1/4 lap and threw a belt causing the water pump to stop spinning and overheated instantly and blew off the lower radiator hose loosing all 5 gallons of coolant. Game over.

bill, sounds like a fantastic race, what kind of speeds were you seeing on the course? I heard that the koh racers were seeing 80 on the speed sections. what a rush.

willing to bet that bigelow and miller were probably doing about that. our top speed was likely about 50 and very brief. the room was there for the speed but we didn't know the course and couldn't push hard because of overheating.

Sorry about breaking it down like this but youtube limits the file duration to 15 minutes and there is about 1 1/2 hours of drive time plus the stops for break downs. I removed the stops from overheating to get the files online in as few files as possible. I have a cd of all the files combined and also have raw video for you Nick. It is in HD so there is about 8GB of video. Need to find a site that doesn't limit video duration or size. disappointing thing about the video is you can't tell very well when there is steep grade up or down, can't see the large rocks on the course(just looks like a small bump on the camera) and really don't have a full appreciation for how tippy some sections were. somewhere in there is the point when we took a hard left and went up on 2 wheels and hit the gas to save it, jeep snaps back to level again. also the hit from behind is on there from lucas murphy. his jeep took a lot of damage from it.

Got the number of the bus that hit me. Lucas Murphy. He took more damage than me. Said he nudged first but we didn't feel it. just heard 2 revs followed by impact. there was no horn heard either.

you know i was going to stay out of this as you guys really don't know me but, this is just plain stupid! i am friends with lucas, real good friends (helped him build that giant buggy of his) and if lucas said he was on the horn he was! one thing about lucas that i know for a fact is if he says something or says he did something, he did! i talked to him abou thtis yesterday (told him how you guys were shit talking him) and he felt badly about how things went down. he said they were on the horn for while, they tied to pass you several times (he claims they were behind you for a while) he got tired of waiting and "nerfed" you and you didn't respond so he "hit" you to get you to pull over. as you should have done!
welcome to racing, when i was co-driving in the rcq (semper fi rock racing) we got hit so many times it wasn't even funny. ian johnson hit us so hard i thought we was in the back seat. its just part of this type of racing, sorry if he hurt your feelings by bumping you but he was faster than you and it is a situation where you should have moved over (maybe look in your rear view mirror??) did you guys see what happened to eric miller at line mtn with bigelow? miller wasn't pissed off at bigelow (i know this for a fact as eric and i are freinds) again it was part of racing.
next time you see lucas go talk to him. tell him who you are. i bet you would be surprised. he is a good guy who would give you the shirt off his back.
have a god one. i will stay out of this now. just wanted you to see the other side of this rather than shit talking
fyi, the jeep looks badass! nice work. figure out the bugs you got going on and you will have a badass racer
see ya todd

I'm not pissed, a little upset about having worked on my rig for over a year just to have someone hit my tail end and cause the damage that was done. We heard no horn, I've got video from the dash cam that didn't pick it up either. I'm a nice guy as well. One thing I didn't want to do was get in the way of the competitive racers. Had I heard him or seen him I woulld have moved out of the way long before he had to bump us. I was disappointed that I didn't hear from him after the race. Should have stopped by and said sorry about the damage, didn't mean to hit you that hard or something like that. I've let it go and will be there for the next race. taking extra steps to prevent it from happening again, going to install rear view mirrors to help. This is a learning experience for me, first race with a new rig. Chalk this one up to a learning experience, I've already let it go. I will introduce myself to him, no hard feelings.

Well said Bill. At the end of the day it still is a race and as you said, we were not there to be in the way of the competitive racers. It was just a shock to get smashed like that w/o hearing the horn, although I'm sure it was our first hard hit of many to come. I was doing my best to keep an eye on guys that came up behind us, but it was hard to do without seeing the dust being kicked up like it was on the faster sections. It was indeed a learning experience and I can't wait till the next time out!!
Tell him to nerf us harder the first time and half as hard the second, LOL. We really had no idea he was there or we would have pulled over immediately. It's funny because if I were watching I would have been like wtf is wrong with this dude not getting out of the way, but that's before realizing how tough it was to see and hear anything but your own vehicle.
I look forward to the races when we're up on somebody's ass nudging them to move. I'm glad you commented Todd. It helps to hear form the other side. No hard feelings here either.
Tell him he owes me a cold beer after the next race though to make up for the shit stain in my fire suit

Okay rubbing is racing. so someone clipping him as he comes by is fair game then. This is per say your own words. I could see if this was KOH, but its not, a cheap shot is a cheap shot no mater how you look at it.
your right there is 3 sides to every story but the camera never lies (unless you edit the tape) we all heard the hit fine but never the horn. Maybe he has a shitty horn, who knows. When he's not racing he's probly a real nice guy, but competition can bring the dark side out of people. You don't win by being nice. For next time figure this guy is going to hit you and react in a way that will position your self to come out on top after contact either in a nice way or not.

I sent him an email and got this reply:
Bill Thank you for contacting me. First off I appoligze for getting into you so hard and I hope your co-driver gets well soon. That was not at all how I wanted to pass you. Immediately after the race I saw Kyle and explained what happened from my point of view.
I was on you for a long time at least a half mile with the horn going and I was right on your bumper, I had been passing cars all day and they all heard me some right away, some it took a bit. I really thought that you were just ignoring me. I nerfed you once on the driver side tire hard enough that the tire let off a big smoke cloud from my a bumper rubbing on it. I backed off and you did not respond. The second time I got into you was just bad timing. I sped up as you were slowing for the turn which made the impact much harder that I expected.
If I had it to do all over agian I would have just followed you till I got a place to go around you.
Please I hope you come out to the next race and introduce your self. If you have any questions or need any advise I am glad to help out.
For your own safety I suggest high mount brake and amber lights on your car. I was so close I could not see your lights. When you are stopping you want the car behind you to have the lights right in the face. In th dust the only part of the car you can see is the top of the cage because it gets fresh air through the windshield which will give someone some warning as they are coming up on you.
